Manchester United star Nemanja Matic has ‘demanded’ ‘showdown talks’ with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after losing his first-team place to Scott McTominay.
That’s according to the Daily Mirror, who state that Matic’s role has been increasingly minimised despite the departures of both Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini – which is leaving the 31-year-old concerned.
Apparently, Matic wants to hold clear-the-air talks with his manager as he looks to work out the best plan moving forward. Furthermore, a number of sides are ‘monitoring’ the Serb’s situation at Old Trafford – presumably with a view to making a transfer move before the September 2nd deadline.
I’d highly doubt that the Reds would be willing to let Matic go though. He’s a solid back-up and an experienced player to have in the squad. It is clear to me that his best days are now behind him, mind – and it does make sense to slowly phase him out.
It’s a tough situation because understandably, Matic wants to be playing regularly. At this time, though, that’s not really a possibility due to his poor performances at the back end of last season combined with the emergence of an ever-improving McTominay.
For me, the best situation is to let Matic remain as a squad player for the duration of the 2019/20 campaign, then try to find a buyer for him next summer if he still remains unhappy with his playing time.
