This season, Manchester United fell way short in the Premier League race.
Jose Mourinho’s men finished an eventual nineteen points behind winners Manchester City, with work aplenty ahead for Jose Mourinho and company.
Perhaps the biggest success story in the Red Devils’ second season under the self-proclaimed Special One was Nemanja Matic.
The defensive midfielder, signed from Chelsea, slotted into the midfield seamlessly and put in some brilliant performances.
Now Matic has been reflecting upon his debut season at Old Trafford, while hinting at what United need to do if they are to fight for both the Premier League and Champions League crowns.
“The only team who is better than us this year is Manchester City,” said Matic, per the BBC.
“Obviously they play amazing football. But we are second and we are in the Champions League next year, which is the most important thing.”
“We need some players with some experience to bring some more qualities to our team,”
“After that, we can fight for the title and the Champions League also. I think that we have improved.”
Our Champions League exit was nothing short of embarrassing. The fact that we didn’t go for the jugular against a poor Sevilla side will always irk the majority of United fans, but in the Premier League, City were just too good this term.
So many results were lost because of moments of hotheadedness, and that’s unusual in a Mourinho-managed side. He loves experienced footballers, so don’t be surprised to see United go out and sign the ready-made player rather than investing the money in youth this summer.
Personally, I’d love to see a world-class centre-back, elite full-back and top-level midfielder come in. Maybe that’s just too much to solve in one window, but we’re certainly in for an interesting summer.
