Nemanja Matic names Man United academy graduate who’ll be a ‘big player’

Over the summer, Manchester United spent big to bring in Nemanja Matic from Chelsea. The midfield maestro has been up there amongst the best defensive midfielders in the English game over the last few years, and to call him our own was a huge coup.

However, recently, he’s been playing with Scott McTominay; somewhat of a surprise to us Red Devils fans. The 21-year-old has been featuring heavily recently, including starting against both Chelsea and Sevilla over the last week.

It comes as no surprise to his new midfield partner though, with Matic claiming that he knew McTominay would be a top player just days after training with him. That’s some huge praise indeed, and what a brilliant start the man from Lancaster is having in Manchester United red.

“He is 21 and to play like that [against Chelsea] and control the game like that is impressive. He will be a big player for Manchester United.” Matic told reporters, including Sky Sports.

“I like him because he is a very nice guy and he doesn’t have a problem to ask something before the game. I am always there to help him.

“When I came to Manchester, I saw within a few days he would become a top player.

“He is working very hard, but I don’t want to say too many things about him because he is still very young.

“But he deserves all the good things.”

He’s seriously come from nowhere, but Mourinho deserves huge credit for giving him the opportunity to thrive. When the Portuguese boss first came to Old Trafford, I genuinely thought our youth production would have been halted somewhat. In fact, it’s probably improved under his guidance.

In my opinion, McTominay seems like a well-grounded young man who just loves playing football. He’s been great in a three alongside Paul Pogba and Matic recently, and that certainly seems to be the way to go for the remainder of this season.
