Nemanja Matic says Scott McTominay could become a Manchester United legend

Manchester United Football Club have given a platform to some absolute greats over the years. Now since Sir Alex Ferguson decided to call time on his glittering managerial career, that production line has slowed down somewhat.

Credit to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, though, who is once again flying the Red flag high, following in his bosses’ old footsteps. United are slowly but surely making their way back to football’s summit, with some top-quality academy graduates coming through.

Amongst those is Scott McTominay, who scored an absolute pearler on derby day to ensure United had Manchester bragging rights for the third time this season. Before his injury, I had the young midfielder as amongst the front-runners to win United’s Player of the Season award.

It seems McTominay is impressing his midfield partner, Nemanja Matic, too. The Serb has heaped praise on the 23-year-old United star, claiming that ‘he will be one of the Manchester United legends one day’. A bold shout indeed.

“We are always talking, especially when he started to play in the first team, but now he’s a proper senior player he plays like he’s had 10 years in the first team,” Matic told Statman Dave while talking to the official ManUtd.com website. “With him, we don’t have any problems.”

“I think he will be a very important player for Manchester United in the next 10 years or more. He is the kind of player and person that you always want to have in the changing room.”

“[He’s] very professional, with a lot of quality in the legs,” he added. “His mentality is what Manchester United needs to have, so I think that with any coach, in any club he will fit very well.

“I’m happy for him and United that they have a player like that in the team. He just needs to continue how he’s been working until now and I’m sure he will be one of the Manchester United legends one day.”

McTominay is a natural leader. You look at the way he barks orders at his teammates already, having only been in and around the first-team for a few seasons. It’s scary how quickly the Scotland international has developed over the last year, though.

We’re now talking about a top-quality box-to-box midfielder who has all the attributes – including sticking the ball in the back of the net from time-to-time.

It’s just a shame that injury derailed his campaign, but now, it’s about McTominay keeping mentally tough. Make no mistake about it, he has a huge role to play during our season run-in when we eventually start playing football again!
