Manchester United have been miles better with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the wheel. The Baby Faced Assassin has galvanised the troops, with the players looking much hungrier and willing to work.
There is only so much he can do, though. This squad probably isn’t one capable of winning multiple major trophies year-in-year-out, and the lack of investment just under a year ago seriously stunted momentum and growth.
Club legend Nemanja Vidic knows all about scooping honours as a Red Devil and now the Serbian Warrior has had his say on all things regarding his former club. Amongst the topic of discussion was who United should target and sign.
Vidic identified Toby Alderweireld as a player United should look at, although the centre-back seems to think he’s not a necessity. Instead, he believes United should look at the midfield.
“Of course I would like him [Alderweireld] there. But I think the club has to have a priority.” Vidic told Stadium Astro, transcripted by the Manchester Evening News.
“What I see is, if you want to be in the Champions League next season and challenge for the Premier League, you have to strengthen the midfield.
“You need that depth in the midfield area.
“In defence, they already have five players, so they can rotate, and it seems like they’re doing well.”
It’s an area that has been hugely hit and miss. Pogba has been excellent recently, so has Ander Herrera. You cannot count on two players, though. In the modern-day game you need a huge squad to fight it out on multiple fronts.
Fred has shown promise recently, as has Scott McTominay. However, Nemanja Matic is on the decline and I’m still not sure Andreas Pereira has the desired quality.
If Solskjaer can go out and sign one top level right-back, an elite centre-half and a proven midfielder, it will have been a good summer. That’s much easier said than done, mind…
