Axel Tuanzebe is being targeted by Newcastle United for a summer move.
With Raphael Varane’s arrival at Old Trafford looking imminent, there needs to be some balancing of the books occurring. On top of the financial side of things, there simply wouldn’t be enough minutes to go around…
Well, fellow Premier League side Newcastle United have identified Axel Tuanzebe as someone who they may be able to sign this summer.
According to The Telegraph, the Magpies are ‘pushing’ to sign the 23-year-old United star, who played 19 games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last season.
Not too long ago, Tuanzebe was being tipped for major things at the Theatre of Dreams. However, a combination of injuries, no real run in the starting line-up and some poor performances have stunted his growth.
Now, ex-Red Steve Bruce is hoping to make Tuanzebe his first signing of the summer at Newcastle United.
While I’d be sad to see Tuanzebe leave, it’s a move worth exploring. The player is at that stage in his career where regular minutes is an absolute must. And what really would loaning him out again do for the centre-back?
With Varane and Harry Maguire looking likely to be the first-choice partnership, with Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof in behind, I’m just not sure where Tuanzebe fits in. It’d be an absolute shame to see him go, but it does make sense at this moment in time.
Personally, I like what I see from Teden Mengi so potentially, I’d keep him around and make him fifth-choice central defender for the upcoming campaign. If we can slowly drip-feed him minutes, perhaps he’ll be ready to take up the starting mantle in a few years’ time.
