Just earlier this morning, we covered a story from the Daily Star in which it was claimed Alexis Sanchez was going to get another opportunity at Manchester United.
Well, it seems as though the cat is out of the bag, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirming as much during his pre-match press conference today.
The Baby Faced Assassin admitted that United are doing their utmost to sign players in January – though as of right now, they’re coming up short despite an absolutely bizarre transfer rumour linking Sander Berge with a move to the Red Devils. That one was abruptly cut short.
Solskjaer did tip the 31-year-old United star Sanchez to silence his doubters next season, claiming that United’s #7 will prove us all wrong… A bold claim indeed.
“We’ve got players here that are working hard to get back as well and, if there is something out there, then the club are pursuing that and looking at it,” said Ole, at his press conference ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester City.” Solskjaer told reporters, including ManUtd.com.
“And, of course, it is the difficult window. It has always been. I can’t remember how many good ‘uns we’ve brought in, good deals that we’ve brought in during January. Henrik [Larsson] was good, Nemanja [Vidic] and Patrice [Evra], they were two [good] ones. Henrik was a loan.
“It’s hard, it’s very hard. The clubs don’t want to lose their best players, so Alexis will come back in the summer and prove you all wrong!“
When you consider just how poor Sanchez has been for United, forgive me, but I find this one tough to believe. We’re talking about a former superstar who looked a shadow of himself during his eighteen-month stay in Manchester. He’s now older with another semi-serious injury under his belt. Why on earth should we expect better?
To me, it just feels like more penny-pinching, which is a sad, sad situation for a club of United’s stature. No business will be done in January despite a serious injury crisis decimating the squad, which sums up the powers-that-be perfectly. They don’t care about what unfolds on the football field as long as their pockets are being lined.
Sanchez will probably come back next season – but only because nobody else wants to buy him. He’ll be happy collecting those extortionate wages and sitting on United’s bench for another year. Heck, I’d do the same…
