Manchester United’s move for Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez seems to be progressing nicely, with Jose Mourinho looking to add some real firepower to an already menacing front line.
However, I don’t feel like United, nor Sanchez are getting the recognition they deserve for making this move happen. I personally thought he’d be heading to City, but from out of absolutely nowhere, Edward Woodward has played a blinder and lured the Chile star to Old Trafford.
Now, former Manchester United icon Paul Ince has had his say on the situation and explained why Sanchez has chosen the red half of Manchester over the blue. What he says makes perfect sense.
“Everyone is raving about City. But when it comes to the two clubs, Man United are miles bigger than City. Players would still prefer to go to them over Pep’s side – that’s a fact. Players won’t go to City because they think they’re a bigger, more historic club than United. Because they’re simply not.” Ince told reporters, including The Mirror.
“Some might get the quick satisfaction of winning the league this year, but those years of history, and the side that Mourinho is building – players want to be a part of that.
“This signing only confirms that. Sanchez had the opportunity to go into a team where he could have won a trophy. But he didn’t, he chose to go to United because of everything they stand for and that says a lot about the size of the club.
“City have some unbelievable players, but winning the league this year doesn’t mean anything. They need to do that year upon year and collect trophies to compete with United. That’s the true test. They’re not serial winners. United are and that’s why players want to be there.”
I just find it blatantly disrespectful when people call Sanchez a mercenary for choosing United. Don’t forget that we’re easily still the biggest club in the country, and that hasn’t changed despite us not winning a title for the last five years.
Sanchez is joining a team with huge aspirations for the future, and although we’re quite a way off the Premier League summit, we’ll no doubt make a title charge next term. United also have a real shot at making it an awfully long way in the Champions League, and the Chile attacker isn’t cup-tied due to Arsenal’s participation in the Europa League.
Basically, I think Sanchez is going to prove an awful lot of people wrong, and I’m excited to watch him tear up the Old Trafford turf.
