Paul Pogba the surprise inclusion in Jose Mourinho’s best-rated XI

Manchester United Football Club have struggled with life since Sir Alex Ferguson decided to hang up the clipboard, that much is obvious.

From David Moyes, to Louis van Gaal. From Jose Mourinho to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, it feels like it has always been an uphill battle. Much of that blame has been placed upon our owners.

In terms of success, it’s Jose Mourinho who can hold his head the highest. The self-proclaimed Special One has lifted two major trophies, both came in his debut season. Unfortunately, the 20-time Premier League champions never kicked on from there.

During these self-quarantining times, we’ve been busy with transfer stories, though we’ve found our readers enjoy these ‘best XI’s that the guys over at WhoScored.com are putting out.

Today’s edition is a Jose Mourinho’s best-rated XI – including one, surprising, United star; Paul Pogba…

As expected, Real Madrid and Chelsea players dominate the team, aside from Paul Pogba, whose 7.49 rating is actually the third-highest.

I say surprise because, well, the relationship between Mourinho and Pogba was frosty at best… They didn’t really get along, while I’ll never forget that epic training ground spat which resulted in a staredown for the ages…

Stats will always tell you what you want them to. They can be manipulated in a way that fits your metric, but Pogba’s output is pretty undeniable. When he plays, United tend to perform better. That’s no coincidence.

At this point, I’m just interested in seeing how Pogba and Bruno Fernandes play together (assuming they get the chance). Who knows, it could well convince the Frenchman to remain at Old Trafford for the foreseeable future…
