Manchester United have themselves a serious Paul Pogba problem. Heck, just today we covered a story from The Sun in which it was claimed that his Old Trafford career is over.
The mercurial Frenchman had been sidelined since September with an ankle issue, until making a return over Christmas – putting in two encouraging substitute appearances.
However, Pogba would then miss games against Burnley and Arsenal. Now, our worst fears have been realised as he’s now injured again…
The article comes from L’Equipe’s Friday print edition, translated excellently via Sport Witness. They confirm that United and Pogba have suffered a further injury blow, with the 26-year-old undergoing surgery on the ankle issue. He’s now set for six weeks out, ruling him out of action until mid-February at the earliest.
In terms of detail, Pogba has had a ‘cleaning’ of the problematic right ankle, which will help him in the long-term rather than forcing the player through the pain barrier until the summer.
First and foremost, Pogba needs to look after his health. In this game, it’s about long-term health rather than a quick fix. There’s no point in United rushing him back, even though right now they need him more than ever.
Even if the club is ready to cash in on Pogba they want to be selling someone who’s healthy rather than struggling on the treatment table as that could decrease his value.
At this point, we shouldn’t expect a fully fit and firing Pogba back until March at the earliest, by which point United’s race in the top-four could well be run…
