Paul Scholes has hinted that Bruno Fernandes should be benched this weekend.
Manchester United just about did enough to get the job done against Omonia Nicosia last night, with the Red Devils winning 3-2 in Cyprus.
These are games that should be being won comfortably, though in typical fashion, the Red Devils made hard work of it when they really didn’t have to.
On the day, it was super subs Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial that turned the tide in United’s favour. The starting line-up pretty much stunk up the joint. None moreso than Bruno Fernandes…
I love the Portugal international. I think he makes a great captain. But sometimes, I’d like to see him try to play with a little more control.
That seems to be a view echoed by Paul Scholes, with the ex-Red-turned-pundit hinting that the United star should be benched after an ‘ineffective’ period for the Reds.
Check out what Scholes said on Bruno Fernandes being benched here:
“The interesting thing [on Sunday] will be Eriksen and Bruno what he does with them, he brought Bruno off after an hour, he’s been a little bit ineffective the last few weeks. Maybe it will be Casemiro, Fred, McTominay and possibly Eriksen. It could be time for Bruno to have rest on Sunday.” Scholes said live on BT Sport, per The Mirror.
What we know is that Erik ten Hag will not shy away from benching Bruno if he deems that the correct decision. The Dutch boss did exactly that with Cristiano Ronaldo – who also looks like a shadow of his former self at present.
It will absolutely be intriguing to see how Ten Hag does go about this one, though. As Scholsey says, I really do believe that Casemiro needs a Fred or Scott McTominay sitting in alongside him. Will it be Bruno or Christian Eriksen who drops to the bench?
I would imagine that the Dane will be the first to drop out as he also looked pretty tired in Cyprus last night. However, I certainly don’t think Bruno is undroppable right now…
