To secure a position in the Premier League’s top four, Manchester United find themselves in a real dogfight.
Four teams are battling it out for two positions and although the Red Devils put another three points on the board over the weekend, it wasn’t convincing whatsoever. For Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he needs these players to be performing at their absolute peak – just as they were when he first took charge.
Back in December through till February, United looked like they could beat anyone. That was largely due to Paul Pogba’s individual brilliance. The Frenchman was displaying the kind of form that made the Red Devils spend £90million to bring him back home.
However, over the last couple of months, Pogba’s form has dipped dramatically. Speaking about the current situation, BT Sport pundit Paul Scholes has said that United ‘need’ the ‘powerful’ Pogba to return if his former employers are to enjoy any success this season.
“I want to see the Paul Pogba that started when Ole came in,” Scholes said live on BT Sport per the Daily Express.
“His first six or seven games, I’ll stretch that to 10, 11 games.”
“The quality of him, the assists, the goals he scored were fantastic.
“It just seems like the last few weeks have been a bit of a struggle for him.
“He seems to be slipping into his old ways a little bit.
“Taking too many touches on the ball, not passing and he needs to get back to it.
“We know what quality this player has, he’s such a powerful player.
“He can strike a ball, he can make a goal, he can score goals.
“He’s what we need, he’s what Manchester United need in this team, which is real quality.
It’s tough. Pogba is a stunning individual when he turns up but it’s that consistency which has overshadowed his almost three-year stint at the Theatre of Dreams.
We need five big Premier League games from him now. If the 26-year-old can take control of each and every single domestic fixture that we have remaining then there is every chance he can power this team to a spot in the top four.
