Peter Schmeichel believes that fellow Dane, Rasmus Hojlund, can turn into an elite level footballer at Man United.
Manchester United have started the season without a recognised striker leading the line. The onus has been on Bruno Fernandes to play in the ‘false nine’ position, due to an injury to Rasmus Hojlund.
The Dane, who joined from Atalanta a year ago, has started the campaign with a long-term hamstring issue. The good news? He is on the mend.
It has been a difficult period for United without a real focal point up top, though Hojlund is no doubt eager to get back and help his teammates.
Before his return, one United legend in the form of Peter Schmeichel, has been full of praise for the ‘fantastic talent’, claiming Hojlund has some of the ‘highest level’ ability. The ex-keeper also went on to say that following talks with Ruud van Nistelrooy, the Dutchman also reckons Hojlund can go right to the top.
Check out what the Great Dane had to say in full here:
“He is a fantastic talent. The possibilities that lie within him are at the highest level and he can pull himself into that conversation. Ruud van Nistelrooy is back at the club and I spoke to him briefly. He says there is so much potential in him. If he can help him… It’s not just Rasmus! The team is not playing with him in the right way, so there are some things that need to be corrected.” Schmeichel told Tipsbladet.
I am a huge Hojlund fan and I was gutted when he started the campaign on the treatment table. It’s always harder to work up to fitness in the midst of a season because you’ve had very little pre-season minutes under the belt, whereas everyone else is already close to 100%.
Hopefully, Hojlund can overcome that obstacle quickly, as United really do need him to hit the ground running and start banging in the goals. Not only that, the young striker is in the team for his work ethic, hold-up play and willingness to bring others into the game. He’s an all-round striker who does have huge potential.
Perhaps this weekend’s game against Southampton will come a little too soon for Hojlund to start, though it would be lovely to see him among the substitutes for a difficult trip to the South Coast.
