Phil Jones has asked to play for U23s, impressing Rangnick: report

Phil Jones is doing all he can to get back onto the football field – including dropping down a level…

Part of Manchester United’s problems over the last few years have stemmed from internal struggles. Far too many times, this club has offered large contracts to underperforming players in order to ‘protect their asset’.

Phil Jones is probably the number one case in point. The Englishman hasn’t played a meaningful game for the Red Devils in two years. Yet, somehow, the centre-back has a contract until 2023. This is all no fault of his own, I’ll add.

It seems that collecting a wage without playing has finally become pretty boring for Jones, who is now ready to drop down a level to get back out on the pitch.

The story comes from The Athletic, who state that the forgotten 29-year-old star has asked to play for the U23s in their game against Chelsea on Friday.

It’s stated that Jones is ‘determined’ to increase his match sharpness in case either a move away materialises, or he’s called up into the first-team mix.

The Athletic also go on to say that Rangnick has been impressed by Jones’ application in training. It’s also thought he would’ve been selected for the game against Young Boys – should Jones have been eligible to play.

This is interesting, to say the least. Obviously, United had the luxury of resting their first eleven against Young Boys. On top of that, the Reds were also contending with a couple of injuries so it was a pretty rare situation.

Simply put, the stars will have to align for Jones to be in contention to start games regularly for United. Will that opportunity become a regular occurrence? I doubt it, hence why a permanent move away feels like the best thing for all involved…

Should Phil Jones be given the opportunity to play for our U23s? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
