Man United defender Phil Jones could be nursing yet another injury problem. In other news, water is indeed wet…
Defence is undoubtedly Manchester United’s number one need during this transfer window – particularly now that the Jadon Sancho deal is all-but-official.
Finding the right partner for Harry Maguire is crucial, though with a number of centre-backs already on the books, one or two may have to leave.
I think we can all agree that Phil Jones should’ve left the club years ago. Sadly, he’s still here, collecting his weekly wage.
Now, according to the Manchester Evening News, the 29-year-old United star who hasn’t played for the club in eighteen months has not been pictured during pre-season training. Injured again…? It seems so.
At this point, I’m not sure what United are hoping to achieve with Jones. It’s just too far gone at this point and he’ll never claw it back at Old Trafford.
Some of the blame is on United, who opted to hand him a new contract in order to protect their asset. That was never a good idea given Jones’ horrendous injury record.
I’m also wondering why Jones himself isn’t pushing for a move away. I’m guessing he’s somewhat content collecting his massive wages and getting what he can out of football before he’s forced to hang up his boots for good.
The overriding feeling around the whole situation is one of pure sadness. Jones has never really had a chance to enjoy success at the highest level due to rotten injury luck. It wasn’t too long ago when this young man was thought of as someone who could play centre-back at United for the next decade – don’t forget he was actually compared to the late, great, Duncan Edwards…
It’s just a shame. Nobody deserves this, at a time where this pre-season, Jones could’ve reminded us all how capable he is when fit. Sadly, it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing him any time soon.
