Phil Jones to feature in squad vs West Ham

Phil Jones will return to the squad for the first time in almost three years, against West Ham tonight.

Manchester United will always change up their teams when it comes to EFL Cup action, that’s always been the case. Tonight will be no different, with a game against West Ham United in the offing.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now has a massive squad available at his disposal as this squad starts to take shape slowly but surely.

Jesse Lingard, Anthony Elanga and Alex Telles are all confirmed squad members. Solskjaer has now offered us some more team news information, with a fourth name set to be included; Phil Jones.

The United star is set to feature in a senior match-day squad for the first time this season. In fact, it has been the best part of three years since he’s played a competitive game for the Old Trafford club – and I bet he’s buzzing this morning.

Check out Solskjaer’s quotes in full here:

“I’m so happy for Phil,” Solskjaer told ManUtd.com. “He has completed two 90 minutes for the Under-23s, played some minutes behind closed doors and he’s got no reaction on his knee. He’s been working really hard.”

“I’ve been part of that myself and had the best part of three years, or at least more than two out of three years, and I know what challenges he’s been through, mentally, thinking ‘will I ever play football again or even be able to walk again and be able to play with the kids in the garden’.

“He’s been so diligent and so professional; no frills, no social media and I’m old school. I like players like that. He just focuses on one thing and gets his head around the challenges and he’s back. He will be in the squad. It’s a good day for him and for us, and it’s something that he has earned.”

First and foremost, I’m delighted for the man. Jones has been working so hard behind the scenes in order to get himself back fit. And at the end of the day, it’s not his fault his body deserted him time and time again.

When signed for United, Jones was a highly regarded young man with the world at his feet. Sadly, it hasn’t worked out that way due to the mounting injury issues but we have to remember he’s human at the end of the day.

All the abuse, all the trolls, there’s just no need in it. He feels that just like any other person would. As fans, it’s our job to get behind players like Jones, rather than tear him down even further.

I hope Jones plays tonight. I hope he plays well. He’s a good bloke and it’s the very minimum he deserves.
