Picture: Chris Smalling in Rome, hoists AS Roma scarf aloft

The Machester United clearout is happening, albeit slightly later than planned.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is doing what he promised; ridding of the dead-wood, slowly but surely. The Red Devils’ squad is now looking rather thin on the ground, but I’d rather it be that way. At least there’s space for young players to come in and prove their worth.

Before Monday’s European deadline, it looks as though Solskjaer’s work isn’t done just yet. Chris Smalling is the latest player who looks to be on his way out, with a loan move to AS Roma in the offing.

Today, Smalling arrived in Italy, with the excellent @ASRomaPress first on the scene with a picture of the Englishman proudly holding the AS Roma shirt aloft.

Although we would have all preferred a permanent move, at least Smalling is now away from United and he knows himself that Solskjaer doesn’t see a future for him here.

You get the feeling it’s only a matter of time before this deal becomes official, and I genuinely hope that Smalling does well over in the Serie A.

With the Reds now having six centre-halves at the club, United need to trim that down and to their credit, they’ve managed to do that. Hopefully, the overhaul continues in January and into next summer, where this squad will really start to look like one in Solskjaer’s image.
