Picture: Luke Shaw wins Man United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award

Luke Shaw was certainly a busy man last night. After winning the Players’ Player of the Year award, the Manchester United left-back followed that up by scooping the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, too.

Voted for by the fans, Shaw beat out stiff competition from Victor Lindelof to complete the double – and he better make room in his trophy cabinet because this will be a night that will forever live long in his memory.

It goes without saying, 2018/19 was by far and away Shaw’s best season in Red Devils colours and to be honest, I never expected it. After falling out of favour under Jose Mourinho I fully believed the left-back to be sold last summer. Credit to the player who never stopped believing in his own ability, now he’s reaping the rewards.

In a real topsy-turvy season, my vote went to Shaw because he remained consistent throughout. The fact that he played 40 appearances is solely down to the work he has put in behind the scenes – and having that mental toughness to not let the injuries get him too bogged down tells you all you need to know about the calibre of the man.

For Shaw, it’s now about kicking it up another notch. He’ll be the first to admit that individual mistakes were made this season, but as he continues to get that belief back, you’d expect him to iron out those errors and only improve going into the 2019/20 campaign.

Congratulations once again, Luke!
