Manchester United have been on a good run of late, putting the Chelsea result aside. Louis van Gaal seems to have found the right formation and personnel that seem to be playing excellent football that is easy on the eye.
Defensively United have improved massively, and one reason for that is the consistency and regulars playing together and becoming used to each others style of play.
One player who has been at the heart of that is Chris Smalling. Before the turn of the year, Smalling was lambasted for a silly red card against City, but since then he has proven every single one of his doubters wrong every time he takes to the field.
His defensive positioning, aerial ability, tackling and toughness have been absolutely fantastic throughout the recent months, and he has turned into arguably our most important defender.
Yesterday he signed a new four-year deal at the club, meaning he’ll remain a Red until at least 2019!
