Manchester United refocus their attentions on Premier League football once again this weekend, and a crucial home game against Southampton awaits. Its a third versus fourth place battle, as both sides look to strengthen their grip in the hunt for Champions League football next campaign.
United’s injury problems could well be a factor here, particularly in the wing-back spots. United will certainly be without Ashley Young because of a hamstring injury, and Luke Shaw is looking unlikely to play due to an ankle problem. Rafael looks like he’ll be struggling for fitness for that game too, meaning Marcos Rojo could well be rushed straight back into things. The same goes for Antonio Valencia, who has missed the past few games due to a pelvic injury.
The midfield and the front line pretty much picks itself. Michael Carrick will return at the holding midfielder spot, with Ander Herrera’s goal pretty much confirming his spot in the team. Wayne Rooney will continue in midfield, meaning Angel di Maria is likely to miss out as he returns to fitness.
Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie will both start once again, but Louis van Gaal will certainly be looking for a bigger contribution from his star duo.
