PICTURE: Potential Starting XI for Manchester United – No Van Persie!

Over the past week or so, we’ve been playing around with different formations and tactics, and trying to work out the best possible way to include all our stars and play to their strengths. Our attacking prowess is second-to-none in the Premier League after Falcao and Angel Di Maria have arrived, and working them all into the team is difficult.

Have a look at our other formations and tactics here.

We reckon Louis van Gaal will persist with the 5-3-2 for a little while longer yet, because in theory it does offer our team the most in terms of both attacking and defending with the current players available.

I’ve gone for a back three of Phil Jones, Jonny Evans and new-boy Marcos Rojo. Jones’ inclusion speaks for itself, he’s been United’s best player this season thus far. I still stand by the fact that Jonny Evans is the best centre-back at the club. He’s had a shaky start to the season but a confident Jonny Evans is hard to get past. Marcos Rojo will provide some much-needed passion to the team, and he’ll be a great addition.

As wing-backs I’ve gone for Rafael and Luke Shaw. Rafa’s attacking ability was there for all to see in the 2012/13 season. He scored goals for fun and grabbed a whole host of assists too. Luke Shaw is another new signing, who cost a huge £27million from Southampton. He’s a full-back who actually likes the defending aspect as well as going forward.

This is where the changes start coming thick and fast – the midfield. Daley Blind won Dutch Player of the Year playing as a defensive midfielder for Ajax. He’ll provide some solidity and cover for the back-line, and he distributes the ball excellently. Ander Herrera has an eye for a killer pass, and he can run with the ball. And Angel Di Maria, well, he pretty speaks for himself. Pace, creation, skill. Everything you’d want of a world-class playmaker.

I’ve gone for a front line of Rooney and Falcao. Wayne Rooney will be involved, purely because he’s club captain, and Radamel Falcao is the best out-and-out striker in world football when fit. Sadly, that means no place in the starting XI for Robin, but that can all change in a  heartbeat.
