PICTURE: The pivotal factor in Manchester United’s defensive woes?

Manchester United once again slumped to a disappointing defeat this season, this time at the hands of newly-promoted Leicester City. Things were looking great for United at half-time, as they held a 2-1 lead and were creating plenty of chances, but a second half calamitous display cost them the game, and it finished 5-3.

Everyone [myself included] reckons the problem lies at the back. Manchester United failed to replace both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this summer – arguably the best centre-back pairing we’ve been blessed with at Manchester United.

Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have all had spells on the sideline this season, and we’re just five league games into the season. The most consistent defender in the back line has been Tyler Blackett, who was unfortunately red-carded this weekend.

The graphic below states that United have used 26 players in the Premier League already this season, three more than the next closest teams in the form of Hull, QPR and Crystal Palace.

Defence is an area where consistency is key, and Manchester United have chopped and changed some part of the defence in every game due to injury or tactical purposes. Defence’s need time to learn each others game, time to adapt, and time to develop as a partnership.

They haven’t been given the chance so far, and maybe this is one of the contributing factors as to why.
