In the early hours of Monday morning, Manchester United had announced that their fixture against Manchester City in the International Champions Cup would be postponed. This was obviously a bitter blow for the fans around the world, and even moreso for the ones that had travelled to the stadium.
However, in the end, the decision to call the match off was 100% the correct thing to do under the circumstances.
At the end of the day, this was just a pre-season game, and there will be plenty more important matches against Manchester City over the next few years.
As you can see from the photo below, the Birds Nest turf is an absolute mess, and although it hadn’t rained for several hours beforehand, the damage had already been done and the surface became heavily waterlogged.
This would have been suicidal, as it almost guarantees that players on both sides would have come off injured, certainly feeling more worse for wear then they would do with one less pre-season game under their belts.

This is the state of the pitch #mufc were due to play on. Injuries galore if the game went ahead. Correct decision. pic.twitter.com/0ijNULAyj3
