Picture: Three Manchester United players in Garth Crooks’ BBC Team of the Week

Manchester United’s Premier League campaign got off to the perfect start. Jose Mourinho’s men won 2-1 at home to Leicester City, scooping their first three points this season.

Although it wasn’t the best display from a team standpoint, there were some standout displays from men wearing United red. For their performances, three Red Devils were named in Garth Crooks’ BBC Team of the Week (gameweek one), and all more than deserve their inclusions.

BBC Team of the Week (gameweek one):

Where else to start but the best goalkeeper on the planet? David de Gea saved our bacon countless times last term. He’s started this campaign in the same form. Leicester mounted some super attacks during the fixture, but with our Spaniard in between the sticks, the hosts always remained confident. It’s nice to see him put a bad World Cup behind him and get right back to his brilliant best.

Then we have man-of-the-moment Luke Shaw. This season represents a huge opportunity for the young Englishman. He’s made the best possible beginning. His all-round game was pretty solid, as the 22-year-old capped things off with a wonderfully taken goal. Whether he meant it or not is another matter entirely, but we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Last but not least, Paul Pogba. The Frenchman isn’t totally content with Old Trafford life at this point in time, but that didn’t affect his display. It was one of maturity, calmness and composure, as he set the tone with an early penalty that put United on their way. Hopefully, there is more to come from the world-class Frenchman.
