Pictures: Erik ten Hag, Steve McClaren arrive for Man United pre-season training

Erik ten Hag and Steve McClaren were amongst the first to arrive as Man United begin their pre-season training.

Suddenly, it all feels very real. Manchester United Football Club start the 2022/23 season today, with Erik ten Hag and Steve McClaren both reporting for the start of pre-season.

Ten Hag was driven into Carrington at around 8am this morning, a full two hours before the first group of players were expected in for their first session of the term.

McClaren also arrived, a full twenty years after his last appearance at the club as a coach.

As per usual, player returns will be staggered as the squad members were all granted different length holidays. Typically, it’s those who haven’t featured for their county over the summer who’ll make their comeback earliest.

We’re now just two weeks away from the squad jetting off to Bangkok for the first leg of their pre-season tour.

As is the case with any good coach, they want to get a head start on the work and are prepared to arrive early, in order to ensure the players are best prepared for what’s to come.

You better believe that today is the start of a new era in Manchester. No longer will this squad be allowed to cruise along at their own pace. Rather, Ten Hag and his new coaching staff will work these guys to the bone.

Thankfully, the lads have at least a fortnight to start getting up to speed before they’ll play their first game. I fully believe they’re all going to need every single session in order to match the physical demands of Ten Hag’s new system.

David de Gea, Dean Henderson, Tom Heaton, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Axel Tuanzebe, Brandon Williams, Luke Shaw, Donny van de Beek, Amad, Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are all expected to be back at Carrington today.

Henderson may well be rerouted straight to Nottingham Forest, depending on when his proposed loan move goes through.
