Manchester United finally welcomed their captain back to action this evening, with Wayne Rooney taking to the field for the club U21s against Middlesbrough. It was great to see the striker back involved, and finally making his way back into the first-team fold.
As you’d imagine, the 29-year old looked a little rusty at the start of the game, and failed to make any sort of telling contribution within the hour that he remained on the field, but hopefully this is down to a lack of match rhythm rather than anything else.
Having Rooney back certainly gives Louis van Gaal another option in an attacking sense, but he also has the dilemma as to where to play him; Especially given the form of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial of late. Its now down to the skipper to keep working hard, impress the manager and work his way back into the team before the end of the season.
