Player Ratings: Galatasaray vs. United

United fielded an inexperienced side for the Champions League tie against Galatasaray, and to be fair to them they put in a decent performance for the most part. Set pieces were once again our achilles heel as we allowed Yilmaz far too much time and space in the box, allowing Galatasaray to win the game 1-0.

There are many positives to be taken out of the game though, young Nick Powell made his first start for his new club and despite a shaky start, he put in an excellent all-round performance. Danny Welbeck also played well, he held up the ball superbly but didn’t really have any real support from his strike partner Javier Hernandez, who himself had a quiet game. Phil Jones put in an commanding performance on his return and he’ll certainly play a key part to our title challenge this season.

Putting the loss aside, it proved to be an entertaining performance from our lads, Anderson and Cleverley shown fight and a bit of energy in the middle of the park and it did our performance the world of good, I certainly wouldn’t begrudge both of them starting against QPR on Saturday.

Anders Lindegaard: The Dane made some excellent saves tonight, including tipping Hamit Altintop’s rocket of a shot onto the bar. 6/10

Rafael: The 22-year old put in another solid performance, he kept offering himself as an outlet down the right. He still has that impetuous side to his game though. 5/10

Michael Carrick: Covering at the back, Carrick made some vital interceptions and won some key headers, he did relatively well. 6/10

Phil Jones: After such a long time out Phil Jones will be pleased with his overall performance. His positioning was excellent and he did well coming up against Galatasaray’s tall forward line. 6/10

Alexander Buttner: Probably his best performance defensively. He also made some nice runs going forward. 6/10

Darren Fletcher: Fletcher had a quiet night, he tried to play the long ball far too often. 5/10

Anderson: A decent performance from the Brazilian, his energy in midfield was what United lacked against Norwich on Saturday. 6/10

Tom Cleverley: Man of the match. He picked some nice passes and did a good job tracking back too. We lacked any real width but Cleverley offered it on both wings. 7/10

Nick Powell: Nick certainly had a debut to remember, he had a shaky start but as the game grew so did Nick’s confidence. I’d like to see more of him this season. 6/10

Danny Welbeck: Danny held the ball up excellently throughout, his all-round game was superb. He tired towards the end and was rightly substituted. 6/10

Javier Hernandez: Chico had another quiet game, although he held the ball up well he didn’t really threaten the Galatasaray goal. 5/10

Subs:

Ashley Young: He wasn’t really involved in the game but he gave away possession far too cheaply. 4/10

Federico Macheda: Macheda’s days at United are surely numbered, he gave the ball away on numerous occasions needlessly and his all round game was poor. 4/10

Josh King: Not enough time to make an impact.
