Player Ratings: Man United edge past Wolves, Shaw superb

David de Gea – Had a quiet afternoon. Made a few simple saves but couldn’t do anything about the Watford goal. 6/10

Ashley Young – Solid defensively. Made some hugely important tackles and blocks, but his passing is so predictable while the crossing needs work. 5/10

Chris Smalling – Did alright to be fair. Positionally he was solid and he led by example. 6/10

Phil Jones – I always worry when he starts alongside Smalling, but he put his head on absolutely everything and made some crucial challenges. Fair play. 6/10

Luke Shaw – Won a tackle then played an outstanding ball into Marcus Rashford to break the deadlock. He was comfortably United’s best player. 8/10

Nemanja Matic – Quiet. I genuinely forgot he was playing until midway through the second half. 4/10

Ander Herrera – Lively, which is what you’d expect. He was sloppy in possession at times, though, but that will come as he works his way back to fitness. 5/10

Paul Pogba – Not his best afternoon. He drifted in and out of the game. Hopefully, he’s saving his best for FC Barcelona in Europe. 4/10

Juan Mata – The lack of pace often lets him down, particularly in closely contested games like today. He just didn’t get involved enough. 3/10

Anthony Martial – Scored the second all-important goal that earned United three points. I’d like to see more overall output from him, though. 5/10

Marcus Rashford – Made some nice runs. Took his goal wonderfully well considering it was on his weak foot. A constant threat. 7/10

Subs:

Jesse Lingard – Nice to see him back in action.

Andreas Pereira – Busy.

Romelu Lukaku – Not enough time to mark.
