Player Ratings: Manchester United 0-1 Southampton

David de Gea – Was as quiet as he’s been all season up until the goal which he couldn’t do anything about. 5/10

Phil Jones – Marauded forward but lacked any final ball. Didn’t have a lot to do defensively. 6/10

Chris Smalling – Made two big errors which fortunately didn’t lead to anything. On the whole did quite well. 7/10

Daley Blind – Great to have him back involved, despite in as a defender. His final ball was good, but lacked match fitness as the game wore on. 6/10

Antonio Valencia – Had an average afternoon. Started slow, but managed to beat his man on occasion. His decision making let him down. 5/10

Luke Shaw – Grew into the game as it went on, but should’ve done better against his former club. 5/10

Michael Carrick – Lacked that final quality ball we know he has in his locker. A poor afternoon by his standards. 4/10

Wayne Rooney – Creativity was missing from the middle of the park today. The further up the pitch Wayne Rooney plays, the better he is. 4/10

Juan Mata – Should’ve had a hat-trick. His all-round play wasn’t bad but how he didn’t score at least once is beyond me. 4/10

Angel di Maria – Probably United’s worst player on the day. His touch was awful, and his passing rarely found a United man. 3/10

Robin van Persie – Barely had a touch. Subbed off due to an injury midway through the second half. 4/10

Subs:

Ander Herrera – Couldn’t change the game.

Tyler Blackett – Looked lost and nervous.

Marouane Fellaini – Won a few headers, but nothing materialised from them.
