Player Ratings: Newcastle 0-1 Manchester United

David de Gea – Made some stunning saves to keep Newcastle at bay. 8/10

Antonio Valencia – Worked tirelessly all night, but his final ball was lacking any real quality. 5/10

Chris Smalling – Had an average game. Won some important headers but also made a few careless mistakes. 5/10

Jonny Evans – Lucky not to have conceded a penalty early on, but got progressively better. 5/10

Marcos Rojo – Lacks the natural width of an out-and-out full-back, but worked hard and got stuck in. Subbed off as he was getting riled. 6/10

Daley Blind – One of his quieter games. He didn’t offer much protection to the back four, but kept United in control of the game when on the ball. 6/10

Ander Herrera – Fortunate to get away with an almost costly mistake as he was hustled off the ball. Could’ve played better. 5/10

Marouane Fellaini – Won plenty of headers, and surprisingly dribbled with the ball to some effect. Did alright. 6/10

Angel di Maria – Started off poorly, and gave the ball away a lot. Made some wrong decisions at key times but got better as the game went on. 6/10

Ashley Young – Scored the all-important goal which gave us three points. Louis van Gaal’s faith in him was repaid. 7/10

Wayne Rooney – Should’ve scored in the first half, but as always he worked his socks off. That eventually led to the golden chance in the 88th minute. 7/10

Subs:

Adnan Januzaj – Showed some nice skills and touches, but didn’t have any real influence.

Juan Mata – Kept United moving in the right direction.

Michael Carrick – Came on and kept United in possession of the ball.
