David de Gea – Largely unchallenged but could’ve done better with the Preston opener. 5/10
Antonio Valencia – Struggled going forward and was caught out numerous times defensively. Must do better. 4/10
Chris Smalling – Looked nervous and struggled with the physicality of the Preston attack. 4/10
Marcos Rojo – Played with energy. Allowed himself to be frustrated by Kevin Davies’ antics, but improved as the game went on. 6/10
Luke Shaw – Looked a real threat coming forward in the first half. Dealt with Preston’s pace out wide comfortably enough. 6/10
Daley Blind – As you’d expect he kept things simple and kept the ball moving. Misplaced a few passes tonight though. 5/10
Ander Herrera – Still not quite sure as to why Ander Herrera doesn’t play every week. He offers United something different going forward and was always moving and asking for the ball. Took his goal wonderfully. Man of the Match. 8/10
Marouane Fellaini – Got better and better as the game went on. Scored with a decent finish to put United in front and won the majority of his headers. 7/10
Angel di Maria – Full of running, troubled the Preston back line and got a cross in more often than not. Final ball lacked any real quality from time to time though. 6/10
Wayne Rooney – Returned to a striker role and that move was justified as he scored from the spot. His all-round game was much better. 7/10
Radamel Falcao – Struggled from the off. Looked lacking in pace, confidence and any real ability. Rightly hauled off. 3/10
Subs:
Ashley Young – Came on and changed the game. His directness and intelligent play was great to see. Good to have him back involved.
