Player Ratings: Rampant Romelu & phenomenal Jones as Man United beat Southampton 1-0

David de Gea – Didn’t really have much to do despite United being on the back foot for a lot of the game. 6/10

Antonio Valencia – Solid defensively. Didn’t have the same attacking threat as last week, though. 5/10

Eric Bailly – Good. Dealt with Shane Long well. Won plenty of aerial battles. 6/10

Phil Jones – My Man of the Match. He put his body on the line for the cause to ensure his team won the three points. Wonderful. 8/10

Ashley Young – Played in a delightful ball to Lukaku for his goal. That was his only real moment of note. 6/10

Nemanja Matic – Brilliant once again. Won plenty of 50/50s and when the going got tough, he was there. 6/10

Marouane Fellaini – Not bad. Won his fair share of headers. The referee didn’t help him though, as every time the ball went near him, Fellaini seemed to get penalised for a foul! 5/10

Juan Mata – Ineffective. In tough away games, Mata seems to struggle for the most part. 4/10

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – Pretty quiet. Didn’t really get into the game and made a few wrong decisions in the final third. 4/10

Marcus Rashford – Worked his socks off defensively. Probably why Mourinho picked him over Martial today. 6/10

Romelu Lukaku – Eight in eight now for big Rom as he scores the only goal of the game. He worked hard throughout. 7/10

Subs:

Ander Herrera – Missed a golden opportunity to make it two and put the result to bed.

Chris Smalling – Brought on to sure things up and secure the three points.

Daley Blind – Not enough time to mark.
