Player Ratings: Smalling absolutely garbage, Pogba nonexistent as United lose again

David de Gea – Made some smart saves, couldn’t do anything about the goal. Same old story. 5/10

Antonio Valencia – Actually played alright. Got forward where possible and defended well. 6/10

Phil Jones – I’m not sure where on earth he was for Newcastle’s goal, but his positional sense is shocking at times. 4/10

Chris Smalling – He dived to give away a free-kick which Newcastle scored from. You literally couldn’t make it up, could you? 3/10

Ashley Young – Defended well for the most part, I’d like him to get rid of the ball quicker though. 5/10

Nemanja Matic – Jonjo Shelvey had his way with both midfielders throughout. As the game wore on, he looked shattered before rightfully being subbed. 5/10

Paul Pogba – Injured or not, the most expensive player in United’s history was awful again today. His performances are becoming a huge concern. 3/10

Jesse Lingard – Buzzed around the pitch, looked lively, but that final ball or pass just wasn’t incisive enough. 4/10

Anthony Martial – Had some huge chances to get United a goal but couldn’t take them. Just not his day. 3/10

Alexis Sanchez – Comfortably our best player as he looked to help United to a victory. Shame nobody wanted to help him. 6/10

Romelu Lukaku – His hold-up play was superb, as was his passing. I’d like to see him stay more central though, and get himself on the end of some opportunities. 5/10

Michael Carrick – He was actually pretty careless on the ball.

Juan Mata – Played some nice passes, but didn’t have enough time to make an impact.

Scott McTominay – Not enough time to mark.
