Player Ratings: Southampton 2-3 Manchester United

David de Gea – The Spaniard made a couple of outstanding saves when the game was close, couldn’t do anything about either goal. 8/10

Matteo Darmian – Looked a bit leggy and tired as the first half wore on. Rightfully subbed at half-time. 5/10

Chris Smalling – Another commanding performance from the centre-back. 6/10

Daley Blind – Gave Pelle a lot of space early on, but got better as the game progressed. 6/10

Marcos Rojo – Looked tired which is understandable due to his lack of playing time. Did alright, but struggled with Mane’s pace. 5/10

Michael Carrick – Uncharacteristically gave the ball away quite often. 4/10

Morgan Schneiderlin – Had a slow opening 30 minutes but after that gave Southampton nothing on his return to St. Mary’s. 6/10

Juan Mata – Scored an excellent team gaol to wrap things up. Went missing at times. 6/10

Wayne Rooney – A non-factor in the first half but improved dramatically in the second. You still expect more though. 5/10

Memphis Depay – Pace looked threatening, but final ball lacked any real quality. 6/10

Anthony Martial – What a game for the young man. Took his two goals wonderfully, looked calm, composed and held the ball up well. Also full of pace. Man of the Match. 9/10

Subs:

Antonio Valencia – Credit to Van Gaal and Valencia, he did well.

Bastian Schweinsteiger – Came on and bossed the game as per.

Paddy McNair – Could’ve done more to stop Pelle’s second goal. Did well putting that aside.
