Player Ratings: Sunderland 1-1 Manchester United

David de Gea – Made a couple of important saves, and couldn’t do a thing about the goal. 6/10

Chris Smalling – Looked nervy throughout. Wasn’t helped by Jones and Blackett. 4/10

Phil Jones – Arguably our best player. Won some tackles, and tried to lead from the back. 6/10

Tyler Blackett – Did ok. Often wandered out of position into left-back, though. 5/10

Antonio Valencia – Did a good job going backwards, grabbed an assist. 6/10

Darren Fletcher – The vice-captain is supposed to do a job on the pitch. He didn’t lead, and he gave the ball away far too often. 3/10

Tom Cleverley – Shocking. Lacked creativity, brains and doesn’t have an eye for a pass. All the attributes a top midfielder needs, he doesn’t have. 3/10

Ashley Young – Awful dive, awful crossing and an all-round awful performance. Disappointing after such a good pre-season. 3/10

Juan Mata – Scored a tap-in, but was pretty average apart from that. 4/10

Wayne Rooney – Quiet once again. Struggled to pick a pace, lacked pace and didn’t seem to drive us forward. 4/10

Robin van Persie – Lacked match sharpness which was understandable. Taken off after an hour. 4/10

Subs:

Michael Keane – Did ok. Great to see him involved in the first-team, but a better quality of player is needed for the long-term. 5/10

Adnan Januzaj – Tried to push United forward but struggled. 5/10

Danny Welbeck – Injected a bit of pace, but lacked end product. 5/10
