Player Ratings: United vs. Real Madrid

In a match where United were robbed blind by the referee in the biggest game of the season so far, a 39-year old Ryan Giggs made his 1000th career appearance as well as putting in a claim for Man of the Match up until the unfair sending off of Nani. Young duo Rafael and Danny Welbeck also staked their own claims for the MotM performance, but the veteran just edges it for me.

The game started with Madrid on top, but as the clock ticked on, United grew into the game more and more, we finally made our breakthrough when Ramos put the ball passed his own keeper. The game turned completely on its head around the hour mark, when Nani was sent off for a high tackle on Arbeloa. Mourinho then sent Modric on, a substituition which earned Real Madrid the victory. The Croat scored the leveller, before Ronaldo rubbed salt into the wounds by scoring the winner, and dumping us out of the Champions League.

Player Ratings

David De Gea – He couldn’t do anything about the goals, played well putting those aside. 6/10

Rafael – Another superb performance from Rafa, he and Giggs kept Ronaldo quiet. 7/10

Rio Ferdinand – Solid at the back when called upon, he is calmness personified. 6/10

Nemanja Vidic – We missed him when he was out injured, his presence alone helps us massively, he was superb again. 6/10

Patrice Evra – The Frenchman linked up with Nani well and bombed forward at the right time. 6/10

Ryan Giggs – Giggs continued to amaze us all, a 39-year old outplayed Van Persie, Ronaldo and Xabi Alonso to name a few. Man of the Match 8/10

Michael Carrick – He broke play up well and played some nice passes just as you’d expect. 6/10

Tom Cleverley – Had a quiet game, went missing at times and didn’t really have an effect on the result. 6/10

Nani – For an hour he was absolutely superb, he made some great runs and got in behind the Real defence up until he was unfairly sent off. He contributed to our goal. 6/10

Danny Welbeck – Another one of our better performers. He made some great runs but lacked composure in the final third. 7/10

Robin van Persie – Had another quiet night, he doesn’t look 100% fit to me. 5/10

Subs

Wayne Rooney – Very ineffective when he came on, he missed a golden chance to bring it level on the night. Fergie fully justified to leave him on the bench 5/10

Ashley Young – Didn’t really do an awful lot when he came on, struggled to make an impact. 5/10

Antonio Valencia – Not enough time to mark.
