‘Popular’ Benni McCarthy faces uncertain Man United future as contract expiry date looms

Benni McCarthy may walk away from Man United this summer, as his contract expiry date looms.

Changes are afoot at Manchester United Football Club. The Old Trafford side, now part-owned by INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, are looking to return the glory days back to Salford Quays.

This summer will be Sir Jim’s first opportunity to leave fans with a positive impression of the work he’s undertaking. Hence, it’s probably the Reds’ most important summer in well over a decade.

A managerial change could happen. The dressing room will certainly look very different. It’s also a real possibility that the coaching staff could be mixed up…

Today, ESPN run a story on the future of Benni McCarthy. The ex-Blackburn striker was brought in as a forward’s coach by Erik ten Hag, doing a positive job, working with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and others.

However, he may not be here for much longer. Apparently, McCarthy is facing an ‘uncertain future’ at United as his contract expiry date looms. That’s despite the fact he is a ‘popular’ figure within the dressing room – and has been since his arrival in 2022.

As of yet, McCarthy has not been approached about new terms, despite doing some great work with the United attacking line.

ESPN have approached United about the situation, with the Reds declining to comment at this current time.

It’s worth noting McCarthy would also like to return to management at some point in his career, after spells with Cape Town City and AmaZulu in South Africa.

The importance of a happy dressing room cannot be understated. If keeping McCarthy on means there are more positive vibes around the camp, while the work he is doing is obviously good, why not keep him on for another year at least?

I don’t think it’s going to play a major role either way. I’d rather not upset the applecart at all, though.
