West Ham are monitoring Manchester United’s transfer activity, and they’re considering making a move for centre-back Chris Smalling.
That’s what The Metro say in an exclusive, with The Hammers thinking Smalling could potentially be available; if Jose Mourinho decides to bring in a new defender this summer.
Although United are lacking in real quality at centre-half, they do have a wealth of options. If, say, a reported deal for Toby Alderweireld comes to fruition, they’d have to offload someone.
Personally, though, I don’t think it’ll be the 28-year-old Smalling on his way out. In fact, the Englishman was arguably United’s best, most reliable option back there during the 2017/18 season.
Sure, Smalling has had his struggles over the years, but I’d much prefer to keep him around than Phil Jones. In an ideal world, Mourinho will completely overhaul the centre-back options, because outside of Eric Bailly, we’re struggling.
This one seems like a non-starter, in my opinion. Tell Manuel Pellegrini that the aforementioned Jones may well be available. For me, they can also take Victor Lindelof, as the so-called ‘Ice Man’ struggled to establish himself whatsoever in his debut season…
