For Manchester United, their problems are stemming from a shaky defence. Jose Mourinho demanded a new centre-back over the summer, one wasn’t delivered.
As you’d imagine, that has had an adverse effect on the players currently at the club. At the season’s start, they were playing like they knew the manager didn’t fancy them. Who can blame them for that?
One player, Eric Bailly, has found himself exiled recently. Personally, I’d still strongly argue that he’s the best centre-back at the club. He backed that up with an excellent performance against Arsenal – his first game in weeks.
Now, according to reports from ESPN, the opponents that day are weighing up a move for our 24-year-old Ivorian who has fallen out of favour.
Serious injury to Rob Holding has left Unai Emery short on numbers, and Bailly, along with Chelsea’s Gary Cahill, sit atop the Spaniard’s wishlist.
For United, if the transfer fee is right, no doubt they’d be tempted to sell up and cash in while they can.
Personally, though, I’d be gutted if Bailly left. His aggression, passion and sheer willingness to win is unmatched out of the current crop, and if Mourinho wasn’t so stubborn, perhaps the former Villareal man would be putting in top-class performances week-in-week-out, ala his debut season at Old Trafford.
