Renowned football figure, Jeff Stelling, believes Man United will end up signing Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton.
Manchester United Football Club need to bring in a centre-back of some description this coming summer. The Red Devils absolutely need help in that area of the field, with injury issues decimating the back four and other players getting older.
There can be no doubt that Jarrad Branthwaite’s name is the one that has popped up most often. The Englishman has enjoyed a stellar season for Everton, helping the Merseyside club to the fourth-best defensive record in the Premier League.
There’s still a chance Everton are relegated this season, which could bring his transfer cost down somewhat. It’d also increase the possibility of the defender moving away from Goodison Park as I’d doubt he’d want to play Championship football.
Now, one pundit in the form of Jeff Stelling believes United will end up signing the 21-year-old Premier League defender, and in a deal worth around £45m.
Stelling reckons Everton need the money, while United need a centre-half. I’d be all for signing Branthwaite for that price, though I’d imagine it’ll likely cost closer to double that fee…
Check out what the pundit had to say in full here:
“Everton fans leave the room. It’s going to happen. Everton need the money and their biggest asset – their most sellable asset – is 21-year-old Jarrad Branthwaite. I think he will find himself at Old Trafford,” Stelling said on talkSPORT.
“Never mind Man City, it’ll be Old Trafford I imagine because with the likes of Evans and Varane and Lindelof and Maguire, all ageing players, they need to bring in some youth and I’m thinking £45 million, something like that, would do the job.”
The task of signing Branthwaite also becomes far tougher if Manchester City are keen. They’re a superior side and club right now and it’d be an easy choice for the player to move to the Etihad if they firm up their interest with an official bid.
In terms of fit, Branthwaite would be absolutely perfect for United. There’s zero doubt about that. It’d be a signing with real longevity in mind, as the Englishman could potentially become a part of the Reds’ back line for the next decade.
