Danny Mills has claimed it would be a stackable offence to try and turn Jadon Sancho into a wing-back.
On the whole, Manchester United have made some good acquisitions under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. It feels like this squad is in far better shape than it was before he took over.
However, there have been some questionable decisions recently. Donny van de Beek is barely kicking a ball. It feels harsh because he’s hardly been given a chance.
This summer, a £73million move to acquire Jadon Sancho was finally sanctioned after at least a couple of years of chasing the Englishman. Right now, I’m wondering why we chased the winger so hard…
Sancho, like Van de Beek, has been given limited opportunities in a system that suits his style of play. So-much-so that there has been talk about possibly converting the attacker into a full-back… One report when as far as stating that training has already begun in that position…
Well, now pundit Danny Mills has claimed that Solskjaer trying to switch the 21-year-old’s position should cost him his job. Honestly, it’s hard to disagree…
Check out what Danny Mills had to say on Sancho here:
“Good luck turning him into a wing-back!” Mills said to Football Insider.
“He didn’t play for England too much in the Euros because I don’t think he was reliable enough to track back and do the defensive side of it. Dortmund never played him there.
“You bought a winger who is going to create chances and score goals. Suddenly you’re going to play him at wing-back in an unbelievably leaky defence. It’s like, really?
“That’s almost a sackable offence in itself.
“Shall we put Cristiano Ronaldo at centre-half because he can head a ball? I think Ronaldo can head the ball better than the centre-halves at the moment so should they put him at centre-half?
“It’s more than a little bit ridiculous.”
We’ve signed Sancho to create chances and score goals. He’s shown glimpses of the quality he possesses but right now I can’t help but feel we’re utilising him completely wrong.
There’s barely a defensive bone in Sancho’s body. To try and play him in a position completely unfamiliar to him just makes the signing a completely invalid one.
Sancho’s a creative type who thrives on being given the freedom to remain higher up the field. If we’re going to take that away from him, or try and change his style of play, what’s the point?
At this point, I feel like the whole squad is waiting for Solskjaer to lose his job. They’re all downing tools in an effort to allow someone else to come in – who can actually coach this mega-talented squad to improve as both individuals and a team.
Although Solskjaer is the one who brought Sancho to Old Trafford, it already feels like the gaffer doesn’t trust the £73million man.
Should Man United try Jadon Sancho as a wing-back? For us it’s a resounding no. Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
