Pundit says Man United should have hired Antonio Conte

TalkSPORT’s Simon Jordan believes Man United should have hired Antonio Conte.

Erik ten Hag is in place, with the football club failing to deliver the goods for the Dutchman thus far.

Results and performance-wise, Manchester United have struggled in their first couple of matches. There’s no getting away from that. I personally would not lay the blame at Ten Hag’s door for that, mind.

Well, TalkSPORT’s Simon Jordan has had his say on the situation. He reckons the Old Trafford club should have taken a harder look at Antonio Conte, before the Italian signed for Spurs around the same time when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lost his job.

The pundit actually believes United should have hired the 53-year-old manager when he became available. Jordan reckons that ‘everybody knows’ United would ‘liven up’ under former Chelsea boss Conte.

I guess the only people who wouldn’t liven up is the Old Trafford faithful, as Conte football can be supremely dull at times. Aside from that, I do understand where Jordan is coming from.

At the time, United actually did test the Conte waters to some extent, though it always felt like it was the Italian pushing for the move, rather than United themselves.

My issue is this. Nobody is succeeding at United under the current ownership. You can hire both Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp at the same time and the club would still struggle. That’s the harsh reality of the situation.

I still firmly believe Ten Hag is the right man for the job. The start has been poor, but he’s hugely likeable within that dressing room. Again, I’ll reiterate, the problems are absolutely not Ten Hag’s fault, though I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the Dutchman walked away after constantly being failed by this board…
