Ralf Rangnick without four for Everton game through injury

Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that four first-teamers will miss the Everton game with injury.

From a fan standpoint, it feels like Manchester United’s season is pretty much over. The Old Trafford club have struggled for large portions of the campaign, costing one manager to lose his job.

Ralf Rangnick has steadied the ship somewhat but the damage proved irreparable in the short space of time he was given. Even then, the performances under the German have been hit and miss.

With eight games left, United probably have to win them all if they’re to be in contention for a Champions League spot. That’s highly unlikely given the lack of consistency, but no doubt the lads will give it their best efforts until its mathematically impossible.

Next up is Everton away. The Toffees are struggling themselves of late, but writing them off would be a huge mistake. Ahead of that match, Rangnick has delivered the all-important team news, confirming that he’ll be without several key starters here…

Check out what the gaffer had to say in full here:

“Cristiano is back again. Luke is still injured,” Rangnick told the media, including ManUtd.com. “We had to take him off at half-time and he’s having problems with his leg where had his operation back in 2015.

“Yeah, the doctor told me that they decided to remove that metal thing in his leg, there are two bolts that need to be removed and this will happen tomorrow and that means he will be out for the next two or three weeks.

“Cavani is still injured. Rapha Varane is still injured, he will be missing for the game tomorrow and the same is true with Scott McTominay, I’m afraid.

“He’s having problems with the sole of his foot. So those four players will be missing.”

So let’s start with the good news. Ronaldo is indeed back following an illness that kept him out of the Leicester City game. This was expected as he was back in training earlier this week.

Scott McTominay has been one of the first names on the team sheet of late and without him, we’re looking very thin in that midfield area. If Fred picks up a problem in-game then we could be in serious trouble.

So I think it’s fair to suggest we’d have liked to see a little bit more from Raphael Varane, but he’s still probably our best centre-back. Losing him here means Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire will be reunited again. We’ve seen how that has gone in the past and I’m a little concerned.

Luke Shaw is now a longer-term absence. Again, he’s our best player in that position but Alex Telles is an adequate backup. Hopefully, the Brazilian can come in and do well.

At this point, the less said about Cavani, the better. Let’s be honest, the Uruguay international hasn’t really looked interested in playing for the Reds this season. I’d argue he’s now becoming more of a hindrance than a help…
