Rangnick asked about Ten Hag appointment, remains tightlipped

Ralf Rangnick was asked about the rumours suggesting Erik ten Hag will be Man United’s new manager…

Manchester United are thought to be close to agreeing a deal with Erik ten Hag to become their new manager from the 2022/23 season.

Timing-wise, the news came at a pretty awful spot for Ralf Rangnick. After all, the German still has plenty of work to do this term before we can even consider worrying about the future.

It was inevitable that, during his pre-match press conference, Rangnick was going to be asked about Ten Hag’s potential appointment. After all, the former RB Leipzig man will have a pretty big say on who is named new boss, so he’ll surely be in the know.

Well, Rangnick was indeed asked the question, but he abruptly shut down those talks, admitting that his sole focus is on the Everton game tomorrow.

“This is a press conference for tomorrow. I don’t speak about any new manager. What I know about all the managers the club has spoken to is they are top managers.” Rangnick told reporters, including Ian parker.

To be honest, this was expected. There was no way that Rangnick is going to come out and say that a deal to sign Ten Hag is close – particularly if it falls through, coupled with the fact that Ten Hag is still Ajax manager.

The last thing United want to do is ruin that excellent relationship with the Eredivisie outfit, by appointing Ten Hag when they’re still in the middle of their season.

It does look like Ten Hag is the guy. I like the idea behind why you’d appoint him over someone like Mauricio Pochettino. Even if we hear something semi-concrete on that front next week, I wouldn’t expect to see the final details sealed until the summer.

Would Erik ten Hag be a good appointment? Let us know your thoughts in the comment box below.
