Rangnick explains why Cavani starts & Ronaldo on bench vs Burnley

Ralf Rangnick has revealed why Edinson Cavani plays in favour of Cristiano Ronaldo this evening.

Manchester United Football Club have a genuine chance to show they’re worthy top four contenders with a win against Burnley this evening.

As we all know, these games are tough. Sean Dyche has a well-drilled side who always play to their own strengths. When the team news was revealed half an hour or so ago, the big surprise was that Cristiano Ronaldo was starting amongst the substitutes.

Instead, Edinson Cavani was given the start up top. No doubt Ronnie is fuming at the idea of starting this one amongst the substitutes – something he’s only done for the third time this season, and the first under Ralf Rangnick.

Anyway, before kick-off, the German manager was asked about his decision – and his reasoning certainly seems fair.

Check out what the gaffer had to say here:

“Today will require a lot of sprinting, chasing balls, a lot of fight for second balls, therefore I decided to start with Edi because he has the kind of profile that suits what we want.” Rangnick said live on MUTV, per Laurie Whitwell.

I get it. Ronaldo isn’t really suited to these sort of fixtures anymore. Simply put, we need someone who’ll cover every blade of grass and chase down every loose ball. Cavani loves to do that sort of work whereas Ronaldo is better at being the fox in the box these days.

You also have to remember that Ronaldo played 120 minutes on Friday night. As he gets up there in age, that starts to take more of a toll on your body. He simply cannot recover as quickly as he’d have liked to and perhaps it’s best he sits this one out – with the view to bringing him off the subs bench if we need him, of course.

You’d like to think that whatever side United put out should have more than enough quality to get the job done tonight. Sure, it’s going to be a gritty, tight-knit affair, but our superior players, assuming they play to their best, should be able to get the win here.
