Raphael Varane a top target for Reds, Madrid already found their replacement: report

Raphael Varane is atop Manchester United’s wishlist ahead of this all-important summer transfer window.

I think it makes a lot of sense for Manchester United to make their move for another centre-half this summer – for numerous reasons.

Eric Bailly is always injured and he could well leave, while Phil Jones remains a constant treatment table problem. Factor in Axel Tuanzebe’s lack of development and Victor Lindelof constantly blowing hot and cold, the only real consistency United have at the back is Harry Maguire.

The name that seems to pop up most often is Raphael Varane, which definitely excites me.

The classy 27-year-old has been named as a ‘top target’ for United this summer by the Manchester Evening News. Erling Haaland also gets a mention.

What’s interesting is that the selling club, Real Madrid, have seemingly already found their replacement in the form of David Alaba, with Los Blancos closing in on a move to sign the out-of-contract Austrian.

Varane himself has a winding down deal. This summer, the Frenchman will be entering into the last twelve months of his current terms with Real Madrid – meaning the La Liga club either have to sell him now, or risk losing him for nothing in 2022.

Why Varane is perfect for Man United

First and foremost, he’s experienced. This club have wasted too much time (and money) trying to sign young defenders to develop – when the chance to win in the here and now is right before our eyes.

Varane would need very little time to settle into life in Manchester, while he’d be more than able to slot into the team from practically day one. He’d offer stability, consistency and a winning mentality.

The defender would be available at a pretty great price, too. What’s not to like about this move?
