Raphael Varane absence from Man United squad vs Chelsea explained

Raphael Varane was mysteriously absent as Man United take on Chelsea in the Premier League.

Manchester United are currently taking on Chelsea in a massive Premier League game, as the Red Devils look to show that Erik ten Hag has their full backing.

The Old Trafford side simply have to win this game against a Chelsea side who are also in disarray at present. If only to ease the concerns around the manager’s job following a pretty turbulent few days for the Dutchman.

When the team news was announced, there was one notable absentee from the squad; Raphael Varane.

The Frenchman has dropped out of the starting line-up in recent weeks, though he wasn’t even on the bench here. As United confirmed the team news, they’d also highlight Varane’s issue – a sore back…

This just pretty much sums up where Varane is at right now. He’s always been plagued by injury issues but right now, it feels like it’s getting even worse for the ex-Real Madrid man. The centre-half position is largely about trust. I’m not sure United have any belief in him at this point in time – both on the field and in the treatment room.

I cast my mind back to that shocking cameo from Varane away at Galatasaray. It was a truly abysmal sub appearance from the World Cup winner. We haven’t seen him since which is telling.

Now that Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are ahead of Varane in the pecking order, it does feel like the curtains are coming down on his Old Trafford career. Be it a January transfer or a summer one, a move away feels like the right option at this moment.
