Raphael Varane was missing from Man United’s side last night due to a stomach problem.
Manchester United managed to get the job done against Brighton & Hove Albion last night – but it wasn’t easy.
For the most part, particularly in the first 45 minutes, United were on the back foot. Perhaps the lads became unsettled when they heard that Raphael Varane would pull out of the side in the warm-ups due to an illness.
After the game, journalist Howard Nurse did some digging and gave us a further update on the issue. The United star was unable to play after medication didn’t ease his symptoms, with the Frenchman having some stomach pains.
Obviously, in these situations, it’s not worth the risk to start Varane, who probably wouldn’t have been able to play at anything close to his highest level.
To his credit, Victor Lindelof definitely stepped up in Varane’s absence. The Ice Man looked pretty solid last night and it does beg the question why he continues to be overlooked in favour of a struggling Harry Maguire…
As for Varane, I’d like to think that the problem isn’t too serious. With United getting that extra day off due to playing on Sunday, my immediate feeling is that he’ll be fit to take on Leeds United. We’re definitely going to need him, that’s for sure.
He brings a calming presence to a defence that is often so hot-headed and careless and although we kept a clean sheet without him last night, there’s no doubt that Varane is our best centre-back.
Get well soon, Rapha!
