Raphael Varane was the latest to heap the praise on young Man United centre-back, Willy Kambwala.
Manchester United’s bread and butter has always been focusing on youth and developing their talents. Erik ten Hag has been more than willing to continue that mantra – to his benefit.
Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho are (rightly) stealing all the headlines right now, though when you delve deeper into the academy prospects at United, you’re filled with hope.
Perhaps one of the players best-placed to make the breakthrough is Willy Kambwala. The club believe in the centre-back, while it’s an area of the field where United could use that extra help right now.
Now, the United starlet, who has made four senior appearances for the club, has been tipped for big things by none other than Raphael Varane. The World Cup winner believes Kambwala is now ‘showing his qualities’, while claiming the teenager has a ‘great future’ ahead.
Check out what the Frenchman had to say in full here:
“He is showing his qualities,” Varane tells Man United’s website, when speaking about Kambwala.
“I think he will play more matches in the future and continue to improve. He is very young, but he is showing his qualities and we trust him.
“He has a great future.”
Varane is bang on the money. Kambwala has only made one senior start for United, but the talent is so obviously there. The 19-year-old played against West Ham, looking like one of the calmest players out there on the pitch.
Kambwala is great on the ball, strong in the tackle, good enough aerially and positionally sound. You’d imagine he will only continue to improve as he develops and grows, too.
With Lisandro Martinez’s injuries becoming a problem, Victor Lindelof possibly on his way out soon and Varane not getting any younger, there’s an opening there for Kambwala.
United have been linked with many centre-back’s already as we gear up to a huge summer transfer window, though the club may well save themselves an absolute fortune in the transfer market, as Kambwala could well be good enough to fill that role.
