Raphael Varane was deemed not fit enough to play for his country over the weekend.
It can be argued that Manchester United’s most important signing over the summer was Raphael Varane. After all, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been crying out to find a partner for Harry Maguire at the back.
In Varane, United have acquired one of the best defenders on the planet. That was evident against Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the Frenchman cruising through the game and looking like an absolutely stunning addition to this squad.
After that, Varane would jet off to play for his country in the World Cup qualifiers. He’d start for Les Bleus against Bosnia & Herzegovina. However, the 28-year-old wasn’t involved at all against Ukraine last night.
Now, we know why. The news came from journalist Loic Tanzi, who tweeted last night that the United star, along with Karim Benzema, was deemed not 100% fit by the France national camp. He’d be made to sit out of the 1-1 draw France played out against Ukraine as it was deemed unwise to make him play three games in such a short space of time.
No doubt United will appreciate France taking care of their new player, because at the end of the day, it’s the club who pay the player’s wages and after all, it was only a qualifier rather than a massively important game.
This does mean there’s every chance Varane will be back in the starting line-up for France this coming Tuesday, which, if the defender still isn’t fully fit, could throw his availability for United’s game on Saturday against Newcastle into doubt.
I guess it all depends on how quickly Varane can get back into the country, and how quickly he can recover after the game and travel back to the United Kingdom.
At the end of the day, even if Varane isn’t ready, Victor Lindelof is a more than capable back-up. Whoever starts in defence for this one against Newcastle, we should have more than enough quality to grab all three points.
